ORLANDO, Fla. -- Job hunters are facing a new trend: businesses asking recruitment companies to keep unemployed people out of their job pools.

Peter May, of Atlanta, said he was hoping Orlando-based recruiter "The People Place" would help him find a job with Sony Ericsson. The company is moving its headquarters to Buckhead, which is located outside Atlanta.

May said he was mortified when he read the message on the website. In all caps, and bold type, it said, "No unemployed candidates will be considered at all."

"To just totally leave those people out of the mix, it's stupefying. I just can't understand it at all. ...To be honest with you, it kind of angered me. You know, I'm a good enough guy," May said on Monday.

Sony Ericcson is supposed to bring 180 jobs to Buckhead, and was lured there with the prospect of a $4 million in state tax credits. But May said if the company is refusing to hire the unemployed, that deal should be rescinded.

During a phone conversation with Atlanta station WXIA, Howard Lawson, of "The People Place," refused to discuss the Sony Ericsson listing specifically, but he did say that he has seen a trend of employers looking to hire employed applicants.

Recruitment experts say many companies are opting out of so-called passive job seekers for a number of reasons. First, it could take longer to get them up to speed in professions that require constant training. They also say people who have not been laid off are believed to be the best in the fields, therefore more valuable. "

"...They also say people who have not been laid off are believed to be the best in the fields, therefore more valuable... "

Uh..Righhhhht. And we ALL know that absolutely everyone we deal with who is employed gives absolutely the best service, is the most knowledgeable about their field, is the most personable, does such a great job for his or her company or agency, contributes to the greater good and is a veritable saint!

Just keep saying things like that and maybe a FEW people will think this is true!

I'm convinced that the majority of bosses know very little about what goes on in their own companies. But then I also wonder if this attitude is actually coming from company owners or is another one of those peculiar HR distortions set up by those who just want to have more filters on their job ads. The more filters, no matter how arbitrary, the easier it is for them to get through those piles of applications!

This one baffles me. I cant even figure out the corporate angle. Firstly, its politically incorrect (at best). If they are willing to publish this on their postings, I wonder what the other 99% of recruiters and placement organizations internal policies are in this regard. (some may be also screening applicants this way but not revealing it publicly). You would think if the goal was to get the best people you would want a wider pool of applicants to screen from . Theoretically it also costs more to recruit somebody from another company.

I'll bet they get some blowback from this .

Talk about digging a deeper hole in your PR mess:

"Doster said Sony Ericsson wanted to ensure it also reached potential candidates who had jobs. It told the recruiter to get some of those folks into the mix."

Why?

The statement seems to confirm the prejudice. This ad wasn't the first one reported to exclude the unemployed; there have been others and news articles even more blatant.

When we have politicians all over the country who unabashedly talk trash about the unemployed through total ignorance, how is it any surprise when a few companies pick up the meme and base their hiring on this kind of wrong thinking. After all, we have car insurance companies who base their rates in part on your credit report, so why should logic prevail anywhere at all!

I can, I admit, see a few circumstances in which a company would want to focus on someone currently employed. For example, if they need someone with very current contacts in a particular marketing or lobbying situation and anyone "out of the loop" for too long might be less valuable. Or in some rare instances, in very high tech specialties, they might need someone experienced with whatever new technology just came out 6 months ago or whatever. But any company with those particular needs it would seem would be better off working with a good recruiter with ongoing contacts who can find those kind of people far more easily than putting an ad in the paper!

Discrimination

Post  Sheila on Sat Jun 05, 2010 4:59 pm

It is discrimination, pure and simple. Everyone knows if a company shuts down, ALL of the employees lose their jobs, not just the least qualified. Again, can we say DISCRIMINATION?

Good grief, what's it going to take, something equivalent to the Equal Rights Amendment for the unemployed to get jobs? Being unemployed seems to have slid into the status of a minority, with all the bigotry and lack of justice that entails.
