Clarification of bill number

Post  nancym on Mon Oct 05, 2009 4:48 pm

FYI all, I spoke with NELP today and got a clarification of exactly which bill is before Congress at the moment for unemployment.

When HR 3548 was referred to the Senate it also had a companion bill from Sen Jack Reed of RI that was S. 1699, which was referred to the Finance committee. Last week Chairman Baucus changed the bill and it passed the committee with unanimous consent. That bill, which is waiting for floor action this week, is no longer S. 1699, but was introduced as an amendment to HR 3548 as a "substitute for the bill."

That means that S. 1699 is no longer something to track in gov websites, etc., but the movement is of the substitute Senate bill for HR 3548, which is online through NELP here (bill's text in PDF format):
http://www.nelp.org/page/-/unemployedworkers/Bill%20text.pdf

Chances are even gov websites won't update right away, but look for recent action on HR 3548, not 1699. And so far it appears that nothing will happen today, most likely tomorrow or later in the week. Watch NELP's website for updates if you don't see anything on CSPAN first.

EUC is much better than the EB process, just like last year. Since this is federally funded it should automatically update to the zero balance accounts quickly once AWI gets the go ahead. Last year I remember the first round of EUC was in my account 2 weeks before I received a notice in the mail.

Voted no, but they have reached an agreement on the bill, which is a huge step. Of course we have to wait on formalities. Rolling Eyes

They have reached an "agreement" in the Senate. The hold up has been because the democrats were pushing to extend benefits by 13 weeks for all 50 states and not just the 27 as aforementioned. Now that this has been agreed upon, they will go through the formality of voting on it. This should easily pass as early as tonight or tomorrow.

I just want to make sure I understand correctly. I am currently on the second tier of EUC. It will end around 11/30. So this will give me 13 weeks of additional EUC before the EB? Assuming EB gets extended beyond the end of the year.. right?
