Post  tj21121008 on Wed Sep 09, 2009 5:47 pm

i just read this on another site!!!!!!!!!!!!! clown I called McDermott's office this morning and was told it will be brought to the floor in 1-2 wks. I called the House,Way, and Means # 202 225-3625 and the gentleman said that HR 3404 in not on the calendar yet because Congress is working on Healthcare Reform!!!!!. I politely told him how important it is that HR 3404 gets addressed because of the thousands of jobless that have exhausted their benefits, I told him to pass my displeasure to the powers that be, including Rangel's staff!. This is crazy folks and I suggest that everyone keep calling McDermott's office & the House,Ways, and Means office because thats the office that the bill is & its collecting dust!.

NEW bill introduced today!

Post  nancym on Thu Sep 10, 2009 8:10 pm

NEW bill for unemployment extension was introduced today!

"In response to direct calls for help by Americans from across the country, Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) introduced new streamlined legislation today, HR 3548, to extend unemployment insurance benefits for an additional 13 weeks in states where unemployment has averaged at least 8.5% over the last three months."

This new bill is similar to his original HR 3404, but simpler, and provides for all states over 8.5% instead of 9%, which was in 3404. And yes, it covers those who have or will exhaust EB.

I don't know where you could possibly have read the text of HR 3548 for the 111th Congress, since it hasn't been posted anywhere yet. Can you provide a link?

And HR 3404 and S. 1647, the larger bills that will most likely be put off a little longer, both provide an additional 13 weeks for all states over 9% and 8.5% rates respectively. That's for all current and near future exhaustees.

Ok, I see what you were looking at now. Please understand that the link provided is simply a press release talking about the new bill, not the actual text of the bill, which is not yet public on the 'net (but probably will be very soon).

The paragraphs you were looking at are giving additional information to basically try to justify why this bill doesn't cover the other 23 states that currently don't meet the 8.5% requirement in the bill for new benefits. It explains that many of these states have rising unemployment rates that would soon qualify them for the existing programs already in place. An example is Connecticut, where thousands of workers are waiting for one decimal point difference to get them up to 8.0 total unemployment rate, which would qualify them for another 7 weeks under the current EB plan. (Many in Connecticut are suffering while this simple math calculation never quite gets to that level!)

But the explanatory notes have nothing to do with the actual provisions of the bill, which has the purpose of providing 13 extra weeks of benefits for those who have recently run out of or will soon run out of EB benefits.

Anything can happen once this bill hits the House floor, but the best thing to do is send emails and call your Congressmen about getting it passed fast!

badger congress!!!

Post  nancym on Fri Sep 11, 2009 2:31 pm

We've already shown how calling and emailing members of Congress can get action moving on House and Senate bills.

If you haven't already done so, use this handy-dandy tool provided by NELP to send your version of a plea for benefits extension to your specific Congressional reps (include your +4 zip code and it picks out your district rep).

http://www.unemployedworkers.org/page/speakout/FederalExtension

For important progress and updates, two sites that track new benefits extensions closely are:

http://www.unemployedworkers.org/sites/unemployedworkers/index.php

and the parent site: http://www.nelp.org/

As well, if you haven't visited the heated debate raging about these bills and other issues, that continues on a daily basis at http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3404/comments

SEND EMAIL AND CALL FOR EXTENSION NEW LINK

Post  flandar on Wed Sep 16, 2009 12:22 pm

This guys is the one we need to email and call to get the Extension Bill passed

As the Detroit News reported, House Leaders are meeting today to pin down a date to either send to floor as is(will get date) or markup in committee to amend and then vote. I am betting the Detroit News will post as soon as something is solidified. Majority of news updates on extensions is coming from there.

Continue to contact Hoyer as he is the Majority leader and brings bills to the floor.
