Sound familiar? Watch this!!

Post  Unemployed In Orlando on Mon Aug 24, 2009 6:03 pm

Just watched this on CNN today, sound familiar?

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/business/2009/08/22/ybl.losing.unemployment.cnn?iref=videosearch

4.4 million people.....wow.....

And yes, they are getting $400+ a week so it would be more than minimum wage for them.

Well, I think these two on the video are really kidding themselves if they think they can just walk out and "pick up" a low wage job if they run out of benefits. As just about everyone here and others who have been unemployed even longer than those two, it's just not that simple, due to the "overqualified" factor, as well as the unbelievable scarcity even of those low wage jobs! (And here in South Florida most retail and waittress jobs want bilingual, on top of all the other hurdles.)

Perhaps the young woman might find waittress work if she has friends who could get her in, but that's just no longer the safety net it used to be. Most of my life I told myself if things got really really bad, "Well, I'll just go and get a waittress job if I had to." Uh-uh--not anymore!

I actually thought the most useful part of that video was the segment afterwards, when they are talking about using online and other extensive networking via social networks or Linked In and the like. With only so many jobs in existence, it makes sense to try unusual avenues.

Ick. Well...should be no surprise--that would be about the statistical average, except that there are only 4 cases here. If they did stories on 6 people, it would be about the same--one full-time job available for every 5-6 job-seekers. The numbers game.
